US President Donald Trump drew attention at the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, on Monday when he praised Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s appearance.
Trump told the audience, “We have a woman, a young woman who’s… I’m not allowed to say it because usually it’s the end of your political career if you say it: she’s a beautiful young woman!”
As he spoke, Meloni stood behind him. Trump continued, “Where is she? There she is! You don’t mind being called beautiful, right? Because you are.” He went on to talk about her political success, saying, “She wanted to be here and she's incredible and they really respect her in Italy. She's a very successful, very successful politician.”
The summit brought together world leaders to discuss the future of the Middle East following the Trump-brokered Gaza peace deal. The agreement, partially involving Israel and Hamas, saw the release of all remaining living Israeli hostages on Monday morning and is expected to lead to Israel beginning a phased withdrawal of its military occupation of Gaza.
The peace process comes after a devastating two years of war in Gaza. According to the Gaza health ministry, around 68,000 people, mostly women and children, were killed.
Trump’s comments about Meloni’s appearance are not the first of their kind. In 2017, he drew criticism for singling out a female Irish reporter in what critics called a “creepy” moment, according to Newsbreak.
