During a recent discussion in the Oval Office, US President Donald Trump expressed enthusiasm about the idea of facing former President Barack Obama in a hypothetical election scenario.
"I'd love that," Trump remarked when asked about the possibility.
"I'd love that …. That would be a good one. I'd like that. And no, people are asking me to run, and there's a whole story about running for a third term. I don't know, I never looked into it. They do say there's a way you can do it, but I don't know about that," Trump was quoted as saying by Fox News.
The 22nd amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1951, restricts presidents to serving no more than two terms. This amendment was introduced following the unprecedented four-term presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
FDR, the only US president to serve more than two terms, remained in office through the Great Depression and World War II before passing away during his fourth term, at which point Vice President Harry Truman assumed the presidency.
Trump recently hinted at the possibility of a third-term run during an interview with NBC News, emphasising that he is "not joking" about the idea and enjoys the work.
However, he stated that he has not explored any legal avenues regarding the feasibility of a third term. "I have nearly four years left of my term, and I’m focused on doing a fantastic job," he added.
Trump's comments have reignited discussions on presidential term limits , though legally, the possibility remains closed due to constitutional restrictions. Despite speculation, Trump maintained that his priority is his current responsibilities rather than looking too far ahead into another campaign.
