Republican Randy Fine secured victory over Democrat Josh Weil in Tuesday’s special election for a US House of Representatives seat in northern Florida, delivering a crucial win for President Donald Trump and the GOP amid their slim majority in Congress. The race was called in Fine’s favor just 30 minutes after polls closed in the solidly Republican district.
Fine’s victory ensures that the GOP maintains its narrow control in the House, where Republicans hold a delicate 218-213 majority. The seat had been left vacant after Mike Waltz, who previously represented Florida’s sixth congressional district, was appointed by Trump to serve as the national security advisor. The district, known for its conservative lean, includes areas like Daytona Beach and the Ocala National Forest.
Despite concerns from Republican officials about his lackluster fundraising, Fine managed to overcome the challenge. His Democratic opponent, Weil, had amassed nearly $10 million for his campaign by the final weeks, far surpassing Fine’s fundraising total, which remained under $1 million, according to Federal Election Commission filings.
Even Trump, speaking at the White House last week, admitted uncertainty about the race’s outcome. However, Fine benefited from Trump’s direct political backing, including a telerally where the president urged voters to support the Republican candidate.
A longtime figure in Florida politics , Fine has been known for his outspoken views. According to The Floridian, he has previously advocated for expelling "any non-Americans who are or have advocated for Muslim terror." He has also clashed with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, accusing him in 2023 of failing to adequately address antisemitism.
Fine has served in the Florida state legislature since 2016, most recently winning a seat in the state Senate. Following his congressional victory, he has resigned from his position in the state legislature to prepare for his role in Washington.
