In today’s top headlines, Congress firmly shut down speculation of a leadership rift in Karnataka, with party in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala confirming Siddaramaiah will continue as chief minister and dismissing buzz of tension with his deputy, DK Shivakumar.

Meanwhile, external affairs minister S Jaishankar revealed that PM Modi stood firm against pressure from the US and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor , asserting India's right to retaliate following the Pahalgam massacre. In a major policy move, the Union Cabinet approved a Rs 99,446 crore Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme to create over 3.5 crore jobs by 2027, offering hiring incentives to employers and salary support for first-time job seekers.

On the ground, horror struck a hospital in Madhya Pradesh where a jilted lover murdered a teenage girl in full public view. And in Bihar, a Rs 100 crore road widening project turned into a safety nightmare, with large trees left bizarrely in the middle of the highway due to stalled forest clearances, leaving commuters to navigate a risky, zig-zag obstacle course.

Trees left in middle of Bihar highway, locals say road now a death trap
In Bihar’s Jehanabad district, a 7.8 km stretch of the Patna–Gaya road has been awkwardly widened, without removing dozens of large trees now left zig-zag in the middle of the highway. This bizarre planning flaw has turned a vital commuter route into a dangerous obstacle course, with locals warning of imminent accidents. The road, once part of NH-83, now falls under the state road construction department (RCD) after a new national highway was built nearby. Engineers involved say the forest department refused to issue clearance for tree cutting, and the district administration failed to allocate the required 14 hectares of compensatory land. As a result, construction was allowed to proceed—but has now been halted until the necessary environmental nod is granted. RCD executive engineer Dhananjay Kumar said the department is awaiting forest clearance and has alerted all concerned authorities. Read more
