MUMBAI: When Mumbai were reduced to 38 for three on Day One, they needed their middle order to steady the innings and guide them towards a respectable total. The team’s call was answered — first by veterans Ajinkya Rahane and Siddhesh Lad, who led the recovery on the opening day.

On Sunday, it was the turn of Akash Anand , Shams Mulani and skipper Shardul Thakur to make crucial contributions as Mumbai reached 406 for eight on a rain-marred Day Two of their Elite Group D Ranji Trophy clash against Chhattisgarh at the MCA Ground, BKC. Only 46 overs were possible in the day.
Resuming at 251 for five, Mumbai lost Mulani (38, 70b, 4x4) early, in the ninth over of the morning session. The lefthander looked set for another trademark rescue act before mistiming an uppish drive to cover off Ravi Kiran (3/35).
Rahane, who had retired hurt on 118 due to cramps late on Day One, returned to continue his innings and looked in fine touch. He added 70 runs off 131 balls in a steady partnership with Akash Anand (60*, 148b, 5x4) to push Mumbai closer to the 400 mark. However, against the run of play, Rahane edged one to wicketkeeper Shashank Chandrakar off Aditya Sarwate (4/103), ending a marathon 303-ball innings of 159 studded with 21 boundaries.
Anand, who made his debut last season, remained composed after Rahane’s dismissal and brought up a well-deserved half-century. At the other end, captain Shardul Thakur opted for aggression, scoring a brisk 42-ball 29 before skying Sarwate to mid-on.
Just as Mumbai looked to accelerate, rain returned in the second half of the post-lunch session, forcing an early end to play. The stop-start day had already seen a 25-minute delay due to showers towards the end of the first session.
