Tom Aspinall's match was stopped after the eye poke at UFC 321The highly anticipated match between Ciryl Gane and Tom Aspinall was supposed to be the night for the British fighter's coronation as the undisputed face of the UFC heavyweight division. However, Gane's attempt to land a punch resulted in a nasty poke spot in both Aspinall's eyes instead. Following that, he told referee Jason Herzog that he was unable to see, leading to the official immediately prompting a stoppage to the match.
Aspinall was immediately taken to the hospital, skipping the post-match media conference. On the other hand, the main event of UFC 321 marked his first official title defense since being promoted from interim champion after the celebrated fighter, Jon Jones, retired from the octagon. Before the eye poking incident, Aspinall had spent a full year recovering from a knee injury he suffered in 2022.

Furthermore, the champion released a statement after suffering an eye injury. He said, “It’s way scarier than what I did to my knee. With your knee, you know it’s going to be alright, but you don’t know how it’s going to be with your eye.” Aspinall also flew back to his home country of England for further medical testing, so it remains to be seen what the extent of the injury is.
