Inside details of Shreyas Iyer's injury: Still in ICU after dangerously low body vitals, internal bleeding

New Delhi: Team India vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital as he continues to recover from the nasty fall he suffered during the third ODI against Australia. Iyer, who took a stunning catch while running backward from point to dismiss Alex Carey, seemed to injure his left rib cage during the effort and was taken to the hospital shortly after returning to the dressing room on Saturday.

It is reliably learnt that Iyer had dangerously low body vitals after the fall and was rushed to the hospital in the situation which was life - threatening at that moment.

TimesofIndia.com has also learnt that Shreyas Iyer could have suffered a splenic rupture, and it caused the internal bleeding.

The impact from the fall split a body part right under the rib cage and resulted in severe internal bleeding. It is understood that he was not in good condition in the dressing room and was swiftly rushed to the hospital after his blood pressure dropped to alarmingly low levels. Those tracking developments say it could have been touch and go, but the BCCI medical team and support staff acted swiftly to ensure he received immediate medical attention.

It is also learnt that Iyer is likely to remain in the ICU for two more days and his stay could be extended if the bleeding doesn't subside in the next 48 hours. If there is no improvement, he could well be under close watch for the coming week but it's safe to say that he will remain hospitalised at least for the next seven days.

In this delicate situation, BCCI is keeping a close tab on the cricketer and even keeping his family informed with the latest updates.

"Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation," BCCI said in an official statement.

"Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress."
