During CinemaCon in Las Vegas, new footage from Avatar: Fire and Ash debuted on the big screen, offering theatre exhibitors a thrilling sneak peek into the much-anticipated third instalment of the groundbreaking sci-fi series.
In a special video message recorded from New Zealand, director James Cameron introduced the footage, explaining that production is in its final stages and promised that the new chapter will delve deeper into the emotional core of the story, while also raising the stakes for Pandora’s inhabitants. “This film isn’t just about new visuals,” Cameron said, “it’s about new heart and soul.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron revealed that the heroes we’ve followed so far will not only continue facing off against the persistent threat of human colonizers but will also encounter a new force—the formidable Ash People. These aggressive Na’vi, distinct in culture and ideology, promise to add a fresh layer of complexity and tension to the narrative.
Zoe Saldana, who returns as Neytiri, introduced two previously unseen Na’vi clans: 'the Ash People and the Wind Traders'. In the footage, Neytiri tells Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), “The strength of the ancestors is here,” as the two brace for violent confrontations amid flaming landscapes and moral reckonings.
The footage closes on a simple note, with a haunting line: “We cannot defeat this enemy that comes from the stars,” underlining the deepening despair and philosophical undertones of the series.
The 2009 original shattered records by grossing $2.9 billion worldwide, while 2022’s 'The Way of Water' followed closely behind, pulling in $2.3 billion globally, making it the third-highest-grossing film ever.
Cameron revealed that this third instalment will be slightly longer than its predecessor, which ran for a hefty 3 hours and 12 minutes.
The official synopsis reads: “In the aftermath of Neteyam’s death, Jake and Neytiri’s family navigate grief while facing the hostile Ash People, led by the fierce Varang. As conflict escalates across Pandora, a new ethical lens begins to shape the war.”
The cast includes returning stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet, among others.
Meanwhile, 'Avatar 4 and Avatar 5' are already slated for release in 2029 and 2031.
