Jharsuguda: A special Pocso court in Jharsuguda on Saturday sentenced a 25-year-old man to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting two minor boys (aged 11 & 13). The conviction was secured within 55 days of the FIR registration, marking a significant achievement in justice delivery.
Jharsuguda additional district & sessions judge-cum-special Pocso judge Puja Sarangi pronounced the verdict after examining evidence that included DNA analysis and witness testimonies.
The case came to light when the mother of the 11-year-old boy filed a complaint on March 23. According to the complaint, the accused lured her son to an abandoned building on March 21 and sexually assaulted him. Investigation revealed the accused had repeatedly assaulted the boy and another minor, aged 13, both from the same locality.
Jharsuguda police arrested the accused within four days of registration of FIR and filed the chargesheet in 16 days. Public prosecutors Prakash Mohanty and P R Singhdeo said the convict had a previous rape case against him. In 2022, the accused was arrested and forward in a Pocso case involving a 16-year-old girl. However, the prosecution witness didn't support the case and he was acquitted in 2023.
"As per the new criminal laws, for all serious crimes efforts must be made to ensure conviction within the minimum possible timeframe. In this regard, Jharsuguda SP has achieved conviction within just 55 days. It is a commendable effort," said Himanshu Lal, IG, northern range.
The court also ordered Rs 8 lakh compensation each to the victim boys for their rehabilitation and psychological recovery. Jharsuguda SP Smit Parmar said keeping in mind the gravity of the situation police ensured the chargesheet was filed within 15 days of registering the FIR. “We ensured a timely and scientific investigation, including DNA analysis which matched the accused. Similar heinous crime cases are being prioritized for fast-track trials," the SP said.
