Bhubaneswar: Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) celebrated its 70th foundation day, marking seven decades of responsible mineral exploration and mining in the state, on Friday. CM Mohan Charan Majhi, addressing the gathering as chief guest, highlighted OMC's remarkable journey from modest beginnings in the 1960s with ₹10 million in transactions to achieving a turnover of ₹23,600 crore in 2024-25 financial year. The corporation now ranks among India's top five mineral-producing companies.

"Odisha holds 41.9% of India's mineral resources, and OMC has been instrumental in harnessing these resources for the state's development," said Majhi. He emphasised the govt's vision to transform Odisha into a mixed economy, focusing on manufacturing sector growth alongside agriculture.

The event witnessed several key inaugurations, including the restart of Dubuna, Badbil iron ore mine, electrification of Tiringa hill mine and Rengalbeda RR Colony, a 900-KW peak solar plant in Koida mining area, and launch of four IT modules for enhanced operational efficiency.

The Dubuna mine, with its annual capacity of 3 million tonnes of iron ore and 0.05 million tonnes of manganese, represents a significant addition to OMC's operations. The mine holds reserves of 25.77 million tonnes of iron ore and 2.6 million tonnes of manganese.

Mines and steel minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena noted that 18 OMC mines are currently operational, contributing to Odisha's self-reliance. Development commissioner Anu Garg emphasised the role of natural resource utilisation in elevating Odisha's economic status.

OMC's commitment to environment protection was highlighted through its achievement of planting over 9 million trees. The corporation's CSR activities extend to education, health, and sports development in mining-affected areas. The ceremony included awards for best-performing mines in various categories and the release of a publication documenting OMC's CSR initiatives.
