In the heart of Angul district, 32-year-old Subrat Pradhan is quietly revolutionising environment conservation through grassroots initiatives that are transforming barren lands into thriving ecosystems.
A recipient of the prestigious Biju Patnaik Wildlife Conservation Award and the Prakruti Bandhu Award, conferred by the state govt, Pradhan has been leading environment conservation efforts since 2017. His organisation, Sathi Paribaar, comprises 13 dedicated members who contribute monthly to various environment causes.
"The declining bamboo population in our forests is forcing elephants into human habitats, leading to unfortunate conflicts," says Pradhan, explaining his initiative to plant 1,500 bamboo saplings annually in forest divisions since 2022. This strategic intervention aims to reduce human-animal conflicts by providing elephants with their natural food source.
One of Pradhan's notable achievements is the transformation of a two-acre wasteland in Kumunda village into a green haven. Working with local communities, his team has planted 1,200 drought-resistant trees, now standing 10 feet tall. The project not only enhances the village's greenery but also promises sustainable livelihood opportunities for locals.
To address wildlife needs during dry seasons, Pradhan has established mini wetlands in the Gurang village under Angul forest division. These water bodies serve as vital resources for wildlife, providing both water and fodder throughout the year. A third wetland is currently under development.
Beyond environmental conservation, Pradhan's team conducts awareness programmes in villages and schools across the Satkosia reserve forest and Angul forest division. They address critical issues like snake bite management, where traditional practices often prove fatal. "We lose 30 to 40 lives annually to snake bites because people choose traditional sorcery over medical treatment," Pradhan said.
The team's innovative approach extends to waste management, converting plastic waste into school dustbins, and organising regular summer campaigns to prevent forest fires. Through these multi-faceted initiatives, Pradhan and his team are not just preserving nature but fostering a harmonious relationship between communities and their environment, setting an inspiring example of grassroots environment leadership.
