Prayagraj: The Sangam city is all set to become the second city in Uttar Pradesh after Lucknow to roll out double-decker electric buses. These eco-friendly buses are expected to begin operations by next month.
Two major routes for these buses have been finalised by the authorities of UP State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC). The first will operate between Prayagraj Airport and Civil Lines bus station via Jhalwa, Chaufatka Railway Overbridge (ROB), High Court flyover, Vivekananda statue crossing, Lok Seva Aayog crossing and Stanley Road.
The second route will connect Govindpur with Prayagraj Chheoki Railway station through MNNIT Railway Overbridge, Allahabad University, Balson crossing, Rambagh Overbridge, Bairhana, New Yamuna Bridge and Naini.
The buses had arrived in the city during the Maha Kumbh for temporary use. However, due to the low height of several railway underpasses across the city, it was not possible to operate them at the time, leaving the buses parked at the Prayag depot workshop in Rajapur for the past two months.
The UPSRTC conducted extensive surveys across the city to ensure safe and uninterrupted operation and finalized the two routes where there are no low railway underpasses.
Service manager of UPSRTC Prayagraj region, Ravindra Verma, said the charging station for the buses is currently being constructed. If everything goes according to plan, the service is expected to begin by next month.
"The move not only promises a modern and greener commuting option for the people of Prayagraj but also marks a significant step towards cleaner and more efficient urban transportation in Uttar Pradesh," he said.
