Three of the UK's "best beaches" are all located within an area of South East England, including one that boasts "one of the most arresting coastlines in Britain". Last week, Luxury travel outlet put out a list of the , three of which are in Sussex.
, in Seaford, , was among them, with the outlet hailing the "superb views of the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs". But while the pebble beach might not be ideal for sunseekers looking for white sands, there's plenty of stunning natural beauty around to make up for it.
According to the outlet, more adventurous visitors can "explore the foreshore eastwards" at low tide "all the way to the Birling Gap, or head west for sea caves".
It notes that this area was a favoured spot among the Bloomsbury Group, a famed association of British intellectuals, writers, artists and philosophers including E.M. Forster and Virginia Woolf. However, it warns people to be "careful of currents by the river mouth and being cut off by tides if you explore the undercliff area".
The nearby beach at Seven Sisters also made the list, described as having "one of the most arresting coastlines in Britain" as it lies alongside a "dramatic stretch of pristine white chalk cliffs that dominate the landscape".
However, like 's beach, it's "not for the faint-hearted" with "a lot of steep up-and-down sections" best suited for those with hiking boots, though it's "visually rewarding", the outlet says.
Visitors are told to look out for Beachy Head Lighthouse, a striking red and white structure that's more than 120 years old, and lies below the cliffs of Beachy Head.
"This is a great spot for outdoor activities so bird watchers, canoeists, and wild swimmers all flock here too," Conde Nast Traveller adds.
However, visitors to both Cuckmere Haven and Seven Sisters Beach are warned over the risk of falling debris from the cliffs above due to coastal erosion, and are warned to keep their distance and take precautions.
The coastguard has recently warned visitors to be careful, particularly around the Birling Gap (part of the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs which overlook beaches below). It urges walkers and sunbathers to avoid the precarious edge and "keep safe and stay away from cliff edges and bases" but crowds often gather nonetheless.
The travel outlet also named West Wittering beach in West Sussex as among the best, noting that it "draws a crowd from all over the south coast, and is particularly popular with windsurfers".
"Low tide brings the promise of shallow lagoons to paddle in and creates a blank canvas for sand-castles," the outlet says.
A grassy patch there is also "ideal for picnics behind the beach huts that fringe the beach", the magazine adds.
