The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin has teased the show's end just days before season two airs.
The acclaimed series, inspired by the eponymous video game franchise, plunges viewers into a world ravaged by a pandemic twenty years prior. The pandemic stemmed from a rampant fungal infection that turned people into zombie-like beings.
The narrative chronicles the journey of smuggler Joel (played by Pedro Pascal), as he is charged with the protection of Ellie (Bella Ramsey), an immune teenager.
Season two, which is set to premiere on Sky Atlantic on April 14, sees the storyline jump ahead five years, following Joel and Ellie as they persevere in their perilous trek across the zombie-infested wasteland.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mazin, who co-created the series with Neil Druckmann, disclosed their decision not to prolong the show beyond the original game's storyline, reports .
"I am not going to go past the game. I'll just say that flat out. So, if people are thinking, 'Oh, these guys are planning the old cash grab thing...'" he stated.
"I'm basically setting a decade of my rapidly dwindling life on fire to tell this story. The show is so hard to make. It has to have an end. So, I'm not going to go past."
Regarding the future of the TV saga, Mazin remarked: "Who knows me, there might be a Dunk and Egg The Last of Us show that happens that somebody does.
"But for me, the only question is: Is it going to be one more season or will it require two more? If this can happen all in one more season, great. If we feel like it makes sense to break it into two, then we will do that."
The Last of Us franchise, which has two video games under its belt, saw its first season cover the entirety of the inaugural game.
With a third season already in the pipeline, the narrative from the second game is set to unfold over at least two seasons.
The upcoming second season of the show promises to bring to life some of the most beloved characters from the video game saga, including Apple Cider Vinegar star Kaitlyn Dever as the formidable antagonist Abby, a soldier with a vendetta.
The introduction of Abby also heralds the arrival of Ellie's romantic interest Dina, portrayed by Isabela Merced from Madame Web.
Joining them is a stacked ensemble cast featuring Young Mazino, Catherine O'Hara, Spencer Lord, Tati Gabrielle, Danny Ramirez, Ariela Barer, and Jeffrey Wright - who will return to his role as militant leader Isaac Dixon from the video games.
