The largest solar storm in two decades could be on its way to the UK which could potentially disrupt communications, power grids and GPS. The rare and powerful 'cannibal storm' has already triggered radio and blackouts across Europe and Africa.
The British Geological Survey (BGS) upgraded its geomagnetic forecast to the highest possible level on Wednesday (November 12) amid an ongoing solar storm, whichprompted aurora displays across the UK overnight. The BGS says the ongoing storm is already affecting communications and satellite navigation. NASA warns that a solar storm is an explosion of particles, magnetic fields, energy, and material blasted into space by the sun, which can interfere with Earth's magnetic fields.
Explaining what causes a solar storm, the BGS states: "Geomagnetic storms are caused by solar activity interacting with the Earth's magnetic field, which has implications for national energy infrastructure and navigation."
Northern Lights may be visible across the UKThe aurora borealis could light up the UK's night sky tonight. AuroraWatch UK has issued five red alerts, suggesting the lights will likely be visible to the naked eye and cameras across the country.
Several waves are expected to strike Earth between today and Thursday morning, according to the Met Office.
Dr Gemma Richardson, BGS Geomagnetic Hazard Specialist, said: "Space weather can have a real impact on the lives of people across the planet.
"BGS records real-time data of geomagnetic conditions, underpinning the national forecast service. Our data suggests that this event could be one of the biggest storms we've seen in 20 years."
Those in northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are said to have the best shot at seeing the lights, the BGS says.
According to Met Office aurora maps, the best time to catch a glimpse of the dazzling aurora tonight is from 9pm until 3am, with the strongest activity forecast at around midnight.
It can take 17 hours for solar storms from the sun to reach Earth, however it can sometimes take far longer.
