Marcus Rashford has reportedly been disciplined for breaching one of Hansi Flick's rules - and it's not the first time the Manchester United loanee has found himself in trouble with a manager. Despite his two goals against Newcastle earlier in the week, Rashford started Barcelona's La Liga match against Getafe on the bench on Sunday. According to The Athletic, that was due to his arriving late for training on the day of the game, prompting Flick to take decisive action.
The German is known for his policy of not starting players who are late for training or meetings, a rule that Raphinha, Jules Kounde and Inaki Pena have also fallen foul of in the past. However, there appeared to be no animosity between the England international and Flick, as Rashford was brought on at half-time at the Estadi Johan Cruyff with Barcelona leading 2-0, thanks to a brace from Ferran Torres. Rashford replaced Raphinha and immediately made an impact, setting up Dani Olmo's goal just 17 minutes after coming onto the pitch. Since joining Barcelona, Rashford has contributed two goals and two assists. But if he hopes to impress Flick and secure a permanent move to Barcelona next summer, he'll need to address his punctuality issues. Now, we take a look at Rashford's historic disciplinary problems.
December 2022On New Year's Day 2022, Rashford turned up late for a team meeting before a match against Wolves. He was benched as a result but came on to score the winning goal in the second half at Molineux.
Then-manager Erik ten Hag spoke publicly about there being "consequences" for breaking rules, saying: "That is what I expect on the pitch, otherwise you can't be successful. When you miss rules outside the pitch, it can go onto the pitch. He gave the right answer."
In his own post-match interview, Rashford acknowledged his disciplinary breach, expressing disappointment at being dropped but added: "I understand the decision and obviously I am happy we managed to win the game. I think we can draw a line under it and move on."
After a 3-0 defeat by rivals Manchester City during the 2023/24 season, Rashford was spotted at a nightclub celebrating his birthday.
Ten Hag was clearly unhappy with his star player being seen out having fun after such a crushing loss, stating: "I am aware of it and I spoke with him about it. It is unacceptable."
He continued: "I told him. He apologised, and that is it." Rashford was then dropped from the starting line-up for their Carabao Cup fourth-round defeat by Newcastle as a disciplinary measure.
Just months later, Rashford found himself at the centre of controversy once more. The forward went on a night out in Belfast, Northern Ireland, during a sanctioned day off on a Thursday, where he reportedly visited a nightclub and drank until the early hours despite having training the next day.
Rashford reported ill for training, prompting a stern response from Ten Hag. He was left out of United's FA Cup clash with League Two outfit Newport County that weekend. He was believed to have been hit with a huge fine as Ten Hag said: "He reported ill. The rest is an internal matter, and I will deal with that." United also issued a statement, which read: "This has been dealt with as an internal disciplinary matter, which is now closed."

Just over a month into Ruben Amorim's reign last year, Rashford succeeded in falling out with his new Red Devils manager. He was dropped alongside Alejandro Garnacho for the Manchester Derby, with Amorim cryptically describing it as a "simple selection" choice and declaring he "pays attention to everything".
Following Rashford's complete exclusion from the squad, it emerged that the Portuguese boss had felt let down by his displays in training. Amorim later revealed that he couldn't persuade the 27-year-old to buy into his philosophy, stating: "What I say is I couldn't put Marcus to see the way you're supposed to play football and to train the way I see it."
In a scathing critique of the player, Amorim even claimed he'd prefer to select his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach over Rashford. The Englishman was subsequently loaned out to Aston Villa for the rest of the 2024/25 season.
