Tom Heaton hasn't played for since February 2023, but the club's third goalkeeper is in line for a new contract, according to reports. The 39-year-old is currently one of four players set to leave once their deals expire in July, having returned as a free agent in 2021.

Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen are widely expected to depart at the end of the season as part of an exodus in Ruben Amorim's first summer transfer window. However, Heaton could be a part of the United head coach's squad next season after starting talks over a contract extension.

According to , the Red Devils have decided to launch discussions with Heaton about delaying his exit until 2026.

Amorim is said to want the veteran goalkeeper to continue as his third-choice option behind Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir beyond the summer.

The report adds that the coaching staff have pushed to retain Heaton's services due to his role in supporting young players in the squad.

It is no secret that Heaton has been a popular member of the dressing room after returning to the club where he spent his academy years.

The England international has featured three times since his comeback, making his debut off the bench in a 1-1 draw against BSC Young Boys at Old Trafford in August 2021.

Heaton made two further appearances in United's Carabao Cup-winning campaign in the 2023/24 season, keeping clean sheets against Charlton Athletic and Nottingham Forest.

Regardless of Heaton's future, Amorim could be on the hunt for a goalkeeper this summer amid uncertainty surrounding Andre Onana.

The 29-year-old is being linked with a potential Saudi Arabia switch, having failed to convince in a second successive season since arriving in Manchester.

Onana could stay if United focus on other areas in what is primed to be the start of a mammoth rebuild helmed by Amorim after a troublesome first campaign.

Old Trafford chiefs are thought to be focusing on bolstering the attack with a striker and a 'No. 10' for Amorim's 3-4-3 system.

Wolves' Matheus Cunha has emerged as the club's priority target, and there is confidence that a deal will go through.

Liam Delap is reportedly United's preferred striker option, with Ipswich Town's relegation from the Premier League making him available for just £30million.

Amorim could also look for reinforcements in defence and midfield, with Evans, Lindelof and Eriksen unlikely to join Heaton in signing extensions.
