A British woman has died after an incident while white water rafting in the French Alps. The woman in her 60s was evacuated to hospital in a "very serious condition" after the accident on the Guisane river in the commune of Briancon. The incident happened on Saturday, said Gap prosecutor Marion Lozac'hmeur.

The woman fell from her raft and was later found on the riverbank before being transported to a hospital. Lozac'hmeur revealed that the woman "was evacuated to hospital in a very serious condition and unfortunately died yesterday evening". An autopsy is to be conducted.

A spokesperson from the Foreign Office told the MailOnline that it is "in touch with local authorities following the death of a British woman in France".

The woman was born in 1956 and is of British nationality. The circumstances of the incident are to be investigated. The woman was rafting with a crew when the accident happened, which consisted of tour guides.

"Investigations are continuing to determine the circumstances of the accident," the public prosecutor said.
