revealed he wasn't going to allow his aggressive brain cancer to defeat him in a heartfelt update. The legendary singer underwent emergency brain surgery on December 4, 2023 and revealed the news to fans just weeks after.
At the time, he didn't state whether the tumour was cancerous – nor did he share the reason behind the surgery, but said he would need time off in order to recover. His loved ones first noticed that Michael was ill when he experienced balance issues and nausea while holidaying on Necker Island in 2023.
Since being diagnosed with glioblastoma, Bolton has been experiencing short-term memory loss, speech and mobility issues during his treatment. Glioblastoma is an aggressive form of cancer starts as a growth of the cells in the brain or on the spinal cord. While treatment can reduce the symptoms and slow the growth of the cancer down, there is no cure.

Following two operations and rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the singer's most recent scan earlier this month appeared to be clear. In a new interview, the singer said: "Succumbing to the challenge is not an option. You're really quickly drawn into a duel. I guess that's the way you find out what you're made of."
Speaking to , he continued: "Whenever you find yourself in any kind of challenging position, just to know that you're not alone going through it is a big deal."
During his treatment, Michael was purposely not given a prognosis for his condition. "It reminds them that they're not alone," he said. Now that he's been given the clear, he admits that his health scare has given him a stronger sense of appreciation for life. His daughter, Holly, revealed that while in recovery following his operation, he started singing "within minutes".
Although he's one of the biggest singers in the , Holly, 47, explained that one nurse had no idea who she was treating and told Bolton's family how she was blown away by his voice.
Michael went on to explain that he "wants to keep going," adding: "I feel there's still a lot to do on the fight side." Taking to social media in January last year, Bolton said: "Just before the holidays, it was discovered that I had a , which required immediate surgery.
"Thanks to my incredible medical team, the surgery was a success." Earlier this year, he was forced to cancel a concert, which had already been postponed from July the previous year as he continued his recovery.

The concert, which will be celebrating his biggest hits, had originally been pushed back to July 2025, after originally being scheduled in July 2024.
Taking to his to inform fans, the When a Man Loves a Woman singer wrote: "Today we are announcing the cancellation of my July 5th concert at the O2 Arena in London."
