Man Utd receive major Andre Onana injury boost as new date for return targeted

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is winning his race to be fit for the start of the new Premier League season. United's No.1 suffered a hamstring injury in the first week of pre-season training, which threatened to rule the 29-year-old out of the start of the new campaign.

Onana's injury also raised the prospect of United having to go into the market to buy a new keeper as cover for the Cameroon international until he made a full recovery. But it is understood Onana's injury - a strain, not a tear - is not as bad as first feared and he is responding well to treatment from United's medical and physio team.

Although Onana will miss United's pre-season opener against Leeds in Stockholm on Saturday, he will travel with the rest of the squad for the three-game tour of the US. Ruben Amorim and his squad leave early next week for the States, where they will play West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton as part of the Premier League Summer Series.

Onana will not feature in the opening two games, in New York and Chicago, but United are hopeful he will have recovered sufficiently to potentially play a part in the final game in Atlanta.

United then return home to play Fiorentina at Old Trafford on August 9 in their final warm-up game, before hosting Arsenal in their Premier League opener on August 17.

Despite failing with two bids for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, United have not given up hope of landing the forward before the start of the new season. Brentford are understood to want up to £70million for Mbeumo, who netted 20 Premier League goals last season, with United only willing to go to £65m.

Even with the disparity in valuation between the two clubs, United are hopeful a compromise can be reached, with Mbeumo, 25, desperate to make the move.

The Red Devils announced last week that third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton had signed a new one-year contract at the age of 39. No.2 Altay Bayindir is set to receive the bulk of the minutes in the US, having deputised for Onana on multiple occasions last season.

United's other goalkeeping options include Radek Vitek, the 21-year-old Czech who impressed on loan at Austria side FC Blau-Weiss Linz last season. Amorim can also call on Elyh Harrison, 19, and Dermot Mee, 22.

All three of the youngsters were named of the bench for United during the final weeks of last season but are each yet to make their debuts.
