Kolkata: A day after ISF-led protests at Bhangar in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district against the Waqf Act, the situation was peaceful but tense. At least nine persons have been arrested in connection with the violence.
According to Kolkata Police: "The situation in Bhangar is completely under control. Specific cases have been registered against miscreants involved in damaging public property and raids are on to apprehend them. The public is advised not to heed to rumours. Stringent legal action will be taken against those found spreading misinformation."
West Bengal Police has so far arrested 221 people, including two brothers involved in the killing of father and son at Jafrabad, in connection with the Murshidabad violence. "We have collected detailed CCTV footage and arrested two people - Kalu Nadab from Murarai police station limits in Birbhum and another person from Suti police station area in Murshidabad border area. Nobody engaged in the heinous crime will be spared," South Bengal ADGP Supratiim Sarkar said.
"A total of 193 fake social media accounts have been blocked by the cyber crime department and legal action has been taken. Since yesterday, no incident has been reported. The situation is under control and no incidents have been reported. BSF, CRPF and state police are patrolling the area," he said.
With reports indicating the role of Bangladeshi radicals in the Murshidabad violence, BSF has tightened security along the international border. BSF (Eastern Command) ADG Ravi Gandhi undertook an extensive tour of the border areas in the Malda district.
