Toonsutra launches beta version of 'Cinematic Mode' for comics

Toonsutra, a digital comics app with over one million monthly active users, has launched the beta version of Cinematic Mode, an immersive comic-reading feature that combines animation, music and narration with traditional panels.

The new mode allows readers to experience comics in a hands-free, auto-scroll format where stories play out with synchronised sound and visuals. The company said the feature is designed to offer a “lean-back” storytelling experience that sits between comics and short-form video.

Built on a multimodal AI framework, Cinematic Mode uses Google’s Veo 3 image-to-video technology to animate comic panels, Gemini 2.5 Pro for character speech, and Lyria 2 for dynamic background music. The system adapts animations and audio to the tone of the story and characters in real time.

“We’ve developed this feature to expand how digital audiences experience comics, while maintaining the integrity of creators’ original work,” said Vishal Anand, co-founder and CEO of Toonsutra. Sharad Devarajan, co-founder and executive chairman, said the goal was to create new ways for India’s mobile-first youth market to consume short-form stories.

The platform currently has partnerships with major global publishers and offers more than 3,300 titles with over 500,000 episodes. Toonsutra said Cinematic Mode will roll out gradually with select titles in collaboration with publishing partners.
