Former cricketer and coach Basit Ali didn’t hold back after Pakistan's disappointing loss to a young New Zealand team in the first ODI in Napier.
After a heavy 4-1 loss in the T20I series, Pakistan had hoped to kick off the ODI series on a high.
But that all came crashing down when star batter Babar Azam (78) was dismissed cheaply, caught by Daryl Mitchell.
From there, Pakistan’s chase of 345 fell apart. From a promising 249/4, the middle-order collapsed, and the team crumbled to a 73-run defeat.
Basit didn’t hesitate while analysing the performance, especially questioning the decision to bat Babar at number three when he had opened the batting in the Champions Trophy, and failed.
"Why did Babar play at number three? He came to open in the Champions Trophy. Where are those so-called experts who said he should open? They should apologise to the nation," Basit said on his YouTube channel.
"Those who think they know cricket should be hit with boots (inhe joote maarne chahiye),” he added.
The former cricket star also pointed fingers at the person who made Babar and Rizwan open in the first place, calling them responsible for Pakistan's decline.
"The person who made Babar and Rizwan openers is destroying Pakistan cricket. The team has become a franchise team, based on preferences," he said.
With the series now on the line, Pakistan will need to bounce back in the second ODI in Hamilton on Wednesday to keep the series alive. Once a dominant force in world cricket, the country’s team has slowly slipped from its former glory, struggling to regain its place at the top.
