India issues Rs 100 coin to celebrate green revolution hero Dr M. S. Swaminathan: Here's what it looks like

The Government of India will issue a Rs 100 commemorative coin to honour the birth centenary of Prof. M. S. Swaminathan. This was confirmed by a gazette notification released by the Ministry of Finance on 11 July 2025.

Dr Swaminathan, known as the Father of India’s Green Revolution, was a visionary agricultural scientist. His efforts made India self-reliant in food production and improved the lives of millions of farmers. In 2024, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.

What Will the Coin Look Like?

As stated in the official notification, the Rs 100 coin will be made of a Quaternary Alloy: 50% silver, 40% copper, 5% nickel, and 5% zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams, have a diameter of 44 mm, and feature 200 serrations along the edge.
  • Obverse (Front Side): The front will display the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar in the centre.
  • Below it will be the motto “सत्यमेव जयते”.
  • The word “भारत” will appear on the left in Hindi and “INDIA” on the right in English.
  • The denomination “Rs 100” will be shown at the bottom.
  • Reverse (Back Side): The back of the coin will feature an image of Dr M. S. Swaminathan at the centre.
  • The year ‘1925’ will be inscribed on the left, and ‘2025’ on the right.
  • The top half will read “प्रोफेसर एम.एस. स्वामीनाथन की जन्म शताब्दी” in Devanagari.
  • The bottom will state “Birth Centenary of Prof. M. S. Swaminathan” in English.

A Symbol of His Legacy as mentioned in the notification, the commemorative coin honours Dr Swaminathan’s life work and his dream of a hunger-free, food-secure India.


The coin is being minted by the India Government Mint, Kolkata, and stands as a tribute to one of India’s greatest scientists.
