'Different world': Madhuri Dixit's husband Dr Nene admits he did not know about her 'past history' while getting married

Dr. Shriram Nene, husband of Bollywood superstar Madhuri Dixit, recently opened up about the emotional complexities he faced after moving from the USA to India. Speaking on Ranveer Allahbadia’s YouTube channel, Dr. Nene shared that he cannot definitively say he is "happier" in India compared to his life in America. He explained, "I can’t say happier. It is different. There you got anonymity and independence and a lot of it was self-driven. In India, I have a culture and we have a lot of ties, so it is different."

Dr. Nene emphasized the contrast between living anonymously in the US and being a public figure in India. Despite missing certain aspects of American life, he expressed gratitude for the cultural ties and the people he is surrounded by in India. He described the shift not as a downgrade or upgrade but simply a different way of life.

Marriage to Madhuri Dixit

Reflecting on his marriage to one of India’s most beloved film icons, Dr. Nene said the celebrity status was present even during their time in America. He stated, "Well, that was the case in America also. Also, I don’t know her like that. She is my wife and partner." Dr. Nene elaborated that their relationship was built on mutual respect and understanding rather than their professional histories. "We look after each other. I never knew her past history and she didn’t know mine. We came from different worlds, but at the same time, we came from the same region, Maharashtra, with the same background. Neither of us thought it would happen. It was kismat, and it has been the most amazing thing in my life," he shared.

Despite coming from different professional worlds, their shared cultural roots helped build a strong foundation. Their bond, according to Dr. Nene, is rooted in destiny and shared values, rather than fame or accomplishments.

Challenges of Public Life and Maintaining Normalcy

One of the key challenges Dr. Nene highlighted was the loss of anonymity in India, something he and Madhuri greatly valued while living in the US. He said, "The main challenge was anonymity. To be able to behave like normal people, and the lucky thing is we both enjoy that, less so in India to a great degree, but we are very grateful for everything and the people. She is so down-to-earth and the way she treats her fans and other people. Same with me. We just try to be good people."

Dr. Nene underscored that both he and Madhuri strive to maintain a simple, grounded lifestyle despite their fame. Their focus remains on treating everyone with kindness and gratitude, values that have remained unchanged regardless of their environment.

Thoughts on Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli's Move

In a more recent conversation, Dr. Nene also commented on Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli’s decision to relocate to London to shield their family from excessive public attention. Sharing his views, Dr. Nene said, "We had a conversation with Anushka one day, and it was very interesting. They were thinking about moving to London because they can’t enjoy their success (here). And we appreciate what they go through, because anything they do attracts attention. We almost become isolated."

His remarks reflected empathy towards the couple’s desire for privacy, a struggle he personally understands given his own family's experiences.

Returning to India

Madhuri Dixit and Dr. Nene married in 1999 and soon after, Madhuri moved to Denver, USA, stepping back from her flourishing Bollywood career to focus on family life. After spending several years abroad and making occasional public appearances, the family made a decision to move back to India in 2011. Announcing the move on Twitter, Madhuri had said, “For all my fans, we are relocating to India! It will be good to be back home."

Dr. Nene has since ventured into the digital space, launching his own YouTube channel, while Madhuri continues to work actively in Indian cinema and television.
