People often overlook the safety precautions associated with gas cylinders. A small negligence can sometimes lead to a major accident, especially if gas starts leaking and we are not alert in time.
In our country, millions of households today use LPG gas cylinders for cooking. This not only makes cooking easier but is also considered a better fuel option. The government is also trying to provide gas to every household through the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. However, people often overlook the safety precautions associated with gas cylinders. A small negligence can sometimes lead to a major accident, especially if gas starts leaking and we are not alert in time. So, let us tell you today what you should do first if a gas cylinder starts leaking...
Open the doors and windows of the house.
If you start smelling gas from the cylinder, first close the valves of the cylinder and the stove. After that, open the doors and windows of the house to allow fresh air to enter and gas to escape.
Do not touch lights and remove flammable objects.
If gas is leaking from the cylinder, do not light matches, lamps, lighters, candles, or incense sticks. Similarly, avoid turning on and off electrical switches, as even a small spark can cause a major explosion. If gas is leaking heavily, move the cylinder to an open and well-ventilated area and immediately call the gas company's customer care number.
Check the Regulator and Pipe
Gas leaks from a gas cylinder are often caused by a faulty regulator. In such cases, first check the regulator and turn it off. If gas continues to leak even after turning it off, remove the regulator and place a safety cap on the cylinder. Also, check the pipe along with the regulator to ensure there are no leaks. Furthermore, it is important to replace the gas pipe after a certain period of time.
Check for leaks in the cylinder.
If gas is leaking from your cylinder, it could be due to a leak in the cylinder itself. Therefore, whenever you use the gas cylinder, keep checking for leaks.
What to do if a fire breaks out?
If a cylinder catches fire due to a leak, first evacuate everyone in the house safely. If the fire does not reach the cylinder, immediately close the valve. To extinguish the fire, wrap a wet, thick blanket or sheet around the cylinder. This will extinguish the fire automatically.
