The festival of Dhanteras 2025 is approaching. This festival will be celebrated on October 18th. On Dhanteras, most people invest in gold and silver. It is believed that this brings happiness and prosperity to the home. Hallmarks are usually checked when purchasing gold. However, simply looking at the hallmark isn't enough. You also need to verify whether the hallmark is genuine, as cases of fake hallmarks are also being reported these days. Learn how to identify genuine gold by verifying the hallmark.
First, perform a visual test.
When purchasing gold, first check the three markings on the jewelry:
BIS Logo (Bureau of Indian Standards symbol)
Purity Mark (carat)
6-digit HUID Code
These three markings must be clear and uniformly visible. If there are scratches or blurring, cross-check the jewelry. A genuine hallmark has a perfect luster and finish.
Identify genuine and fake hallmarks with an app.
You can use the BIS Care App, developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards, to determine whether a hallmark is genuine or fake. You need to install the app on your mobile device, enter your name, phone number, and email address, and verify your mobile number and email address via OTT. After this, you can use the app. To verify, go to Verify HUID and enter the jewelry's HUID number. If the jewelry is genuine, the app will display all the details, including its purity and product name.
Gold Prices Based on Carat
Besides all this, remember that whenever you go to buy gold, check the gold price before leaving home. The prices of 24-carat, 22-carat, 18-carat, and 14-carat gold vary. It should be noted that 22-carat gold contains 91.66% gold, 18-carat gold contains 75% gold, and 14-carat gold contains 58.1% gold. Gold jewelry is made by mixing other metals with it.
Gold prices vary by carat.
It's important to check the price of gold before purchasing. Purity and price are determined by different carats:
Carat Purity (%) Code
24 Carat 99.9% (not for jewelry)
22 Carat 91.66% 916
18 Carat 75% 750
14 Carat 58.3% 585
9 Carat 37.5% 375
22-carat gold is most commonly used in jewelry because it is both pure and durable.
Understand government regulations carefully.
The government has mandated BIS hallmarking for jewelry sales. Previously, only 14-, 18-, and 22-carat gold jewelry was sold, but now hallmarking is mandatory for 9-carat gold as well. This rule will come into effect from July 2025. This will give customers the option to purchase gold at an affordable price, while also ensuring confidence in the quality of the jewelry.
Be sure to check prices before leaving home.
Be sure to check the current rates before buying gold, as prices change daily. You can check rates by visiting the BIS or the Government of India's Gems and Jewelry website. This reduces the risk of jewelers quoting incorrect prices.
