The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has taken a big decision, under which new 20-rupee notes are going to be issued soon. If you have old 20-rupee notes, then this question must have come to your mind: whether these notes will be valid now or not. As soon as this news came, people became curious to know what would happen to the old notes. Will those notes be discontinued now? Will only new notes be valid now? Let us understand the answers to all these questions in simple language.
Notes with the signature of the new governor will be issued.
RBI has said that it will soon issue new 20-rupee notes under the Mahatma Gandhi (new) series. There will be only one change in these notes, and that is the signature of the new governor, Sanjay Malhotra. RBI has clarified that the design, color, size, and all security features of these new notes will remain the same as before. Meaning only the signature will change, everything else will remain the same as in the current ₹ 20 note.
Will the old 20-rupee notes not be valid now?
After this decision, it has been made clear that all the ₹ 20 notes in circulation, irrespective of the signature of any governor, will continue to be valid as before. That is, there will be no effect on the validity of old notes. RBI has said that this is a normal process. Whenever a new governor is appointed, new notes with his signature are issued.
Many people think that if a new signature has come on the note, then the old notes will be discontinued. But this does not happen. According to RBI and the Government of India, until a note is formally taken out of circulation, it remains completely valid, i.e., legal tender. This means that you can buy goods, repay loans, or use the old ₹ 20 note for any payment.
Design and features of the 20-rupee note
The color of the 20 rupee note under the Mahatma Gandhi (new) series is greenish yellow i.e. yellow-green. The size of these notes is 63 mm x 129 mm. The picture of Ellora Caves is printed on the back of the note, which shows the cultural heritage of India. The geometric designs on it match the color of the note and make it easy to identify.
When will the new Rs 20 note be implemented?
Sanjay Malhotra has taken over as the Governor of RBI from 11 December 2024. Under this, new Rs 20 notes with his signature will now be issued. RBI has said that this process will start soon.
