By now we all know that our hair and skin does some of its best work overnight, with a good night’s rest doing everything from regenerating new cells to releasing hormones and enzymes that boost growth. However, the way we sleep – or rather, what we sleep on – can also have a negative effect on both our hair and our skin.
Whilst cotton pillowcases are great for breathability and are easy to wash, they also cause friction that can damage hair over time, not to mention absorb oils and dirt that are on our hair and skin, leaving us with breakouts and greasy looking hair. As I am a slave to a freshly bleached set of highlights, I decided to try swapping my usual pillowcases for to try and keep breakage to a minimum – and I was absolutely blown away by the results.

Although I was sceptical that it would make a dramatic difference, by the end of the first week of using the I could already see that I was waking up with considerably less frizz and flyaways than I usually would. My hair felt less coarse and textured, and was much smoother and softer thanks to the silk texture, which allows your hair to slip over it as you move in your sleep preventing breakage.
Whilst cotton pillowcases are designed to absorb moisture, silk ones like won’t draw out any unnecessary moisture, and help keep your hair hydrated – a must for someone like me with dry, bleached locks. They also retain much less oil and dirt, meaning there’s less transfer of it onto your hair while you sleep, giving me the added bonus that it didn’t look nearly as greasy as it usually would between washes.
The silk material also , too. It not only prevents it from drying out, but it holds less bacteria and oils that can cause breakouts and the reduced friction can slow down the formation of wrinkles long term.
After more than a month of using it at night my hair definitely has noticeably improved in texture. It’s . Usually if I sleep with my hair in a bun, the next day it’s almost impossible to brush through, but now I can easily get a brush through it in the morning which has made my morning routine significantly quicker and easier.
My skin also looks much clearer, and I can feel the effects of my skincare products much more when I wake up in the morning since the was no longer absorbing most of them whilst I slept. If there’s one thing I love it’s a beauty hack that requires minimal effort, and this definitely checks that box for me – better skin and hair whilst doing nothing but sleeping? Absolutely a winner in my eyes!
The only real downside with the is that it’s a little pricey at £89, but for me it’s a worthwhile one time investment for the ongoing benefits. It also comes in a choice of seven different colours on Amazon.
For something a little bolder, the is £139 and comes in a pink and red stripe pattern that would be a great addition to your bedding.
If you want to keep your hair looking good all day, too, a silk scrunchie is a must-use. This set of are £35 for a pack of six, and come in a selection of bright colours. The 100% silk covering helps protect hair from snagging and damage whilst tied up, keeping it smooth and healthy.
