On Friday, Ed was a guest on Capital Breakfast where hosts Chris Stark, and quizzed him about the issue. Chris opened the conversation, saying: "Got to ask you this, right? So we went to Elton John's house this week… We need to settle something. Have a listen to this."
He then played a clip of Elton from a prior Capital interview where the music legend could be heard saying: "I mean Ed Sheer-an playing in living rooms." Ed then confessed he had confronted Elton over this in the past.
He explained: "I've actually had the awkward conversation with him being like 'I’ve known you for 15 years, it's not Sheer-an.' But it's just one of those things. I actually have had that conversation."
Chris said: "You can’t argue with him, can you?" But Ed replied: "Well I can, I can and I do, but, but I don’t know it’s quite nice…" Jordan then added: "It's kind of like when your nan just says something, and you know she said it wrong and you just have to go with it haven’t you."
Ed then declared he will always be Sheer-an to his peer, and added: "And it’s just his way, it’s like how my parents always call me Edward, I’m not Ed to them, always Edward and I’ll always be Ed Sheer-an to Elton."
Ed and Elton appear to have a jovial relationship - with the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road singer poking fun at the younger singer in interviews in the past. They collaborated together for their Christmas song in 2021 - but Elton pretended to be outraged when Ed announced the news in a European interview ahead of schedule. The superstar told NME in October that year: “Yeah, he’s let the cat out of the bag didn’t he!
"I was sworn to secrecy and then big mouth f**king Sheeran goes to the Netherlands! It’s supposed to come out – we haven’t finished it yet, so there’s still work to be done.”
He added at the time: “I can’t say any more than that because it’s in his hands… I spoke him this morning – he’s in Sweden and he’s going in the studio to try and finish it off.”
Ed is aiming to be back in the charts next week as he has unleashed a brand new single. The track, titled Azizam, was released on Friday and is the lead track on his upcoming album.
Ed will release his eighth studio album, which is titled Play, later this year. It is set to be the first in a number of operations based albums, with follow ups titled Pause, Fast-Forward, Rewind, and Stop expected to follow.
